Government is not simply incompetent...
So who is plotting what...
Those who come to power by cultural and economic subversion are paranoid and see saboteurs everywhere. Under Communism the truth is dangerous and workers are shot for failing to meet production targets.
Imagining there are people who can make better shoes than the government is a crime as you might just as well say you want a free market.
A system built on lies requires much blood.
Plotting the downfall of nations is older than the Bible and the reason history is littered with corpses.

You could write a religion about stopping this or you could write a religion to take advantage. Both exist...
Making it happen is a religion too. Organised evil is real and how people sell their souls for wealth and power. Infiltrate, subvert and overcome those who wish to be sensible and practical. Often as easily as calling people bigots or by playing on the emotions of the populace.
They destroy nations from the top down and recruit helpers from among those they have ruined and exploited. Blaming capitalism, imperialism, the patriarchy, boomers or white men.
Nationalist tells the story of who is plotting what and how all the nations of the world can triumph in peace and prosperity.
